Photography 101 – Understanding Your Camera

Photography is the art, craft, and discipline of taking permanent pictures by photograph by using light, either electronically through an electronic camera, or optically by means of some other light-sensing material like photographic film, to capture light. Photographers do this to either create a temporary image on film for showing to a client, print that image, or to present it to others for appreciation or sale. Some modern techniques of photography are used in conjunction with computers and digital cameras to take still shots. Photography is also done in still-life style with many people using a stage light to illuminate objects inside of the photo to create a more moving or realistic appearance to the scene. Photography is sometimes used as a form of art. Portraits of family members or friends can be made more beautiful and more meaningful by the right type of photography.

Most people know what a camera looks like but very few people understand how photography works. The parts of a camera that make up the body of the camera and lens are all part of what is called the imaging system of the camera. The parts of the lens are called lenses. These parts of the camera are composed of the mirror, camera housing, camera lens, eyepiece, and battery. All these parts play an important part in the way photography is done and the quality of the images the camera produces.

Shutter speed, aperture, ISO, and focus are the most common elements in photography. The shutter speed is what controls the amount of light that the camera absorbs and releases on the picture being taken. The aperture has a direct effect on the quality of the picture. The higher the aperture, the shorter the shutter speed, and the lower the resolution of the shot. The higher the resolution, the faster the shutter speed, and the greater the resolution of the shot.
