When a player is dealt their hand of cards they are then given the option to bet, check, raise or fold. This gives everyone a chance to see their hands and decide if they want to continue playing.
Before a hand is played the players are required to put in a small amount of money called an ante. This gives the pot a value right off the bat and allows the dealer to know how many chips they will need to deal cards to the hand.
The next step is to see the flop. This is the first time that the community cards are seen by all players, and it’s the time when everyone has a chance to bet, check or raise. If no one bets, everyone receives another set of hole cards.
A flop is followed by a turn and a river. During the turn and river, all players are given the opportunity to bet, check or raise again.
Once the flop and turn have been completed, the dealer will then put a fifth card on the board, which will be used by all players to create their final five-card hand. Once all the cards have been dealt, the player with the best hand wins the pot.
This hand is determined by comparing each of the player’s cards against the community cards and other players’ hands. There are 10 ways to win in poker, starting with the highest card and going down to the lowest.
High Card – A single card that is the highest rank in the deck, regardless of suit. This is the most valuable card, and if there are two or more cards that match this high card, then they break a tie.
Pair – A pair of cards that are similar in rank and value, like two 2s or two 5s. A pair is the highest hand and wins the game if there are more pairs than one player has.
Straight – A straight is a series of five cards, each of which is different from the last. The player with the straight that starts with the highest card wins.
Flush – A flush is a hand that contains five cards of the same suit, such as a 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7. The player with the flush wins the pot if there are more players who have this hand than there are who do not.
